Fun-A-Day 2012

A month of translation

Fun-A-Day is a yearly artmaking event organized by the Artclash Collective. Participants pick a type of project—illustration, songwriting, etc—and produce a new piece every day during the month of January.

For the 2012 Philadelphia show I decided to do a translation a day. Or rather... I didn't exactly do an entire translation every day—I allowed myself to follow the section breaks in source material to keep the scope manageable—but I did translate every day. My total for the month was thirteen poems and five short stories. Not bad.

I can't share any of the actual translations because I don't have permission from copyright holders, but here's a list of what I worked on:

Poem with Skin // Poema con piel
A poem by Octavio Armand (Cuba/U.S.A., b. 1946).
January 1–3, 2012

Prayer for Marilyn Monroe // Oración por Marilyn Monroe
A poem by Ernesto Cardenal (Nicaragua, b. 1925). This was one of my favorite pieces from the project. I really wish I could publish it.
January 4, 2012

Piano Solo // Solo de piano
A poem by Nicanor Parra (Chile, b. 1914).
January 5, 2012

Mud // Barro
A poem by Enrique Lihn (Chile, 1929–1988).
January 6, 2012

Siesta // La siesta
A short story by Cecilia Absatz (Argentina, b. 1943). I liked Cecilia Absatz a lot. Over the course of the month I read her entire short story collection, Féiguele y otras mujeres, and translated three of the stories.
January 7–8, 2012

A Bad Girl // Una niña mala
A short story by Montserrat Ordóñez (Colombia, 1941–2001). This was one of the hardest things I worked on, and probably the biggest failure. I couldn't nail down her voice at all.
January 9–11, 2012

A Ballet of Ballerinas // Un ballet de bailarinas
A short story by Cecilia Absatz (Argentina, b. 1943).
January 12–15, 2012

Artist's Decalogue // Decálogo del artista
A poem by Gabriela Mistral (Chile, 1889–1957).
January 15, 2012

The Miraculous Ship // La barca milagrosa
A poem by Delmira Agustini (Uruguay, 1886–1914).
January 16, 2012

The March of the Mountain Chains // La marcha de las cordilleras
A poem by Raúl Zurita (Chile, b. 1951).
January 17, 2012

Southern Bridge // Puente en el sur
A poem by Jorge Teillier (Chile, 1935–1996).
January 18, 2012

Light is Like Water // La luz es como el agua
A short story by Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia, b. 1927). Another of my favorites from this month.
January 19, 2012

Left Hand Braille // Braille para mano izquierda
A poem by Octavio Armand (Cuba/U.S.A., b. 1946).
January 20, 2012

VI. I Remember You the Way You Were // VI. Te Recuerdo Como Eras
A poem by Pablo Neruda (Chile, 1904–1973).
January 21, 2012

A Song of Despair // Una Canción Desesperada
A poem by Pablo Neruda (Chile, 1904–1973).
January 22, 2012

XX. Tonight I Can Write // XX. Puedo Escribir
A poem by Pablo Neruda (Chile, 1904–1973).
January 23, 2012

III. Oh Expanse of Pines // III. Ah Vastedad de Pinos
A poem by Pablo Neruda (Chile, 1904–1973).
January 24, 2012

[La Teta] // La Teta
A short story by Cecilia Absatz (Argentina, b. 1943). As you can see from the title, this one is unfinished, but the vast majority is in English.
